In Chapter Three of The Quarry Wood by Nan Shepherd you will find a delightful family conversation about the northern lights, the aurora borealis:

The above painting is of Gardenstown [Gamrie] where I first saw the Arory-bory-Alice. I cannot recall the exact year.  I only recall the Arory-bory-Alice and that I was with my cousin William Philip. We were then both young medical students.
