Text of the OS entry:The remains of an Old Winding Avenue which formerly extended to the Kilmarnock House (now used as the Ragged School) and formed one of the Principal Approaches to that Old Mansion; a part of it was removed at the Construction of St. Marnock St. and the Dundonald Road, the Portion remaining is Pleasantly Shaded on either Side with huge Old trees; Situated off the Dundonald Road; So Called from the Circumstance of it’s being the favourite Walk of the Lady of Kilmarnock after the death of the Earl, her husband, where She was Wont to Wander, it is Said, with downcast looks, and Pour forth the Sorrows of her heart.”
