It was recorded in the late 19th century that an old yew tree situated in the garden belonging to Raith House marked the spot where the Abbots had their ‘pleasaunce and hall’ from which the parish derived its name. Nothing of the ancient hall survived but the Yew tree did (and it was still growing).
