A new generation of gardeners

There was a lovely account of Mertoun House Gardens given in the Scotland on Sunday, 14th March 2021. Here are a few extracts:


In the Ordnance Survey book of 1859,  a different spelling of the house is given and one of the informants is Robert Imery, Gardener:

This is the estate layout as drawn in the late 1850s. The walled garden sits north of Merton House:

The first official census in Scotland records that Robert Imery lived with his family in the ‘Garden House of Mertoun’:

The ‘Garden House of Mertoun’ was in fact the old Mertoun House. It still survives.
