Whigham Inn, Sanquhar [also known as Queensberry Arms Hotel] has become a ‘Building at Risk‘.
In ‘A Very Parochial Anthology’ by T. A. Johnston the following verse by Rabbie Burns is shared with this introduction:
“This is perhaps the best verse Burns ever wrote on a window pane and it demonstrates the poets affection for Edward Whigham and the cronies who roistered there . . ..”
“Envy, if thy jaundiced eye,
Through this window chance to spy,
To thy sorrow thou shalt find,
All that’s generous, all that’s kind,
Friendship, virtue, every grace,
Dwelling in this happy place.”
My thanks to Rab Wilson for taking me to Whighams Inn and sharing some of his happy memories of the “Tuesday Nicht Club“.
