The British Journal of Psychiatry and Pharmaceutical Industry advertising

For my short film “By yellow lights tormented” I researched all archived (monthly) editions of the British Journal of Psychiatry. My research covered 1993 to date (August 2015).

In my research I found that the digital archive of the British Journal of Psychiatry does NOT include contemporaneous adverts or sponsors. Yet my memory, faulty as it may be, recalls that every published monthly edition of this Journal contained multiple full-page adverts promoting products of the pharmaceutical industry.

Only one edition of the digital archive, that of December 1997 [December 1997; Volume 171, Issue 6] includes examples of advertising that continues to this day. Presumably it was a “mistake” that the adverts for this edition have been “retained” by the publishers. A true archive should not be edited. All marketing should be included in digital archives. Full stop.

These are the adverts that feature in the British Journal of Psychiatry for December 1997:
