‘Realistic Medicine: Valuing People”

Alongside my NHS Lothian colleagues in psychiatry I have received an invitation to the Realistic Medicine Conference for 2018. It is entitled “Valuing People”.

I have repeatedly made clear my support of Scotland’s Realistic Medicine initiative. Over two years have passed since the Scottish public confirmed a collective view that sunshine legislation was necessary. Unfortunately in this time, the public has not received a single update on “progress” made on their request.  In this instance, for the Scottish Government to describe this initiative as “valuing people” seems unrealistic.

This is the current position of the Scottish Government on its approach to the transparency of competing financial interests in healthcare, academia, and research:
