Boghead

As an NHS doctor I worked in West Lothian for more than five years. I became very fond of the place and the people: where I found everydayness and kindness together.

West Lothian folk used to talk about their past – and I enjoyed listening to their memories. Their personal memories of mining villages, many of which are now no-more, particularly moved me.

This post is about Boghead, house and garden, on the outskirts of Bathgate: the garden has now become beautifully wild, and the house, well it was demolished before 1967.

This post is dedicated to Jim Easton. His wonderful photographs of Boghead gardens are life sustaining. Thank you Jim.

A gardener’s footnote:

In late life, Thomas Durham Weir, ornithologist, lover of nature, champion curler and supporter of tramps seems to have developed dementia.
