Ross Fountain

Daniel Ross , ‘Old Daniel’, was a successful gunmaker in Edinburgh:
He also had a shop on St Andrew Street where the doorway stone flourishings, with his monogram, survive to this day:

On the 7th June 1832, Daniel Ross was married. Harriet, his bride, was nearly twenty years younger than he was:

Harriet’s father owned and ran The Douglas Hotel, St Andrew’s Square:

By 1836, ‘Old Daniel’ was of sufficient means to retire from making guns:

In 1851 Daniel and Harriet lived at Kevock Bank, Lasswade:

By 1861 they were living at Rockville, Muarrayfield:

17 July 1867, the Scotsman reports the gift to Edinburgh  of an ornate founatain:
