I was fortunate to be a friend of Malcolm Allan, Coneyhill, Bridge of Allan. Malcolm died on the 2nd of October 2020. In his life, Malcolm collected everything and anything that related to Bridge of Allan. He left his vast archive to the Dr Welsh Trust. This included his postcard collection.
Thanks to Paul Husband, the postcards of Malcolm Allan have now been digitised. The intention is for these postcards to be soon made open on the Dr Welsh website. Meantime, what follows, is a selection of a few of my favourite postcards. I have added one or two personal comments:
The bridge before it was replaced in 1959:
The white bridge over the Allan: before it was replaced with an iron structure and painted blue:
The Cox Burn, by Drumdruills orchard:
Henderson Street before tarmacadam:
The Dr Paterson clock reads 2.20pm, but we will never know exactly what day, month or year this postcard actually records:
Can you spot Dr Paterson? [He is on the left standing by the gate-piers to Fernfield]:
Henderson Street: Long before there was ‘NAIRN’S’:
Dr Paterson’s clock now reads 3.15 pm:
The Memorial Park in its youth:
Passing Mount Hope on a quiet Sunday:
The Fountain of Nineveh [the flight of the heron]:
Fountain Road before the street trees were felled:
Airthrey castle before it became a place of learning:
My ‘Grumpa’ was schooled here:
Aye, that’s the Wallace monument!:
Sheramoor Inn, where I once celebrated my 40th birthday:
Sheramoor, where Andrew learned to play a guitar:
Time passes, but the Allan water flows, still beautifully so:
As a result of our friendship I became part of Malcolm’s archive:
