‘Medicines on the horizon’

RCPsych in Scotland  is  the professional medical body for psychiatry in Scotland and “set standards and promote excellence in psychiatry and mental healthcare.”

The next continuing medical educational event for RCPsych Scotland will be held in Glasgow later next month. Those attending will gain CPD credits [Continuing Professional Development].

The full draft programme can be accessed here.

The ‘Medicines on the horizon’ session is the last of the day and  will include two talks on Esketamine and Dementia medication respectively. The speakers are yet to be confirmed. The event “will not be recorded in any capacity”.

Another session at this conference is on Sodium Valproate. This was one of the examples explored by Baroness Cumberlege in her review: First Do No Harm.  I continue to hope, against experience, that lessons around the introduction of new medications have been learned. All too often enthusiasm for new treatments, often backed by industry promotion, fails to pay sufficient attention to the potential risks involved.
