The above photograph, taken from a plane in 1948, is of St Nicholas, Aberdeen.  Just left of the church spire is No 55, St Nicholas Street. To make way for a new shopping centre it was demolished sometime after this photograph was taken. On the ‘platform’ created above the ‘new’ St Nicholas Centre, as an unhappy medical student, I used to eat my sandwiches.

Looking at this photograph, taken from above 73 years ago, I am struck by an opportunity lost for Aberdeen to create a truly historic open civic space around Provost Skene’s house.

I used to eat my sandwiches.
