When exploring the National Gallery in Edinburgh I was drawn to this woodcut by Christiane Baumgartner. It is called Abzweig Lehrte II. I am going to look for more of Christiane’s work as the abstract quality of her – interlaced-art – both fascinates and delights me.
This is part of her biography, as provided by the National Gallery of Scotland:
Christiane Baumgartner was born in 1967, in Leipzig, Germany where she studied at the Academy for Visual Arts, following which she obtained a Masters in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in London. Baumgartner is known for woodcut prints based on her own films and video stills. Her detailed method of carving with a line grid gives her images a photorealistic quality that are visually similar to a flickering video monitor.
