In early 1987 my father bought me a car: a mark II Ford Escort. It was light blue [in the same shade of blue as police cars of the time]. It cost £400 and had been ‘reassembled’ by a young chap from Wester Hailes, Edinburgh.
This car lasted less than three years. It nearly killed me.
I recall over-taking an articulated lorry on the A90 in pelting rain only to see the windscreen wiper motor fall to the floor. My windscreen was then a white-out. I accelerated through a ‘guessed’ roadway and pulled into a hard-shoulder that I could not see.
In early 1990, when I was a junior doctor working in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary I came out of the hospital to find that my mark II Escort was gone! It had been stolen!
A week later it was located in Persley scrapyard. By then it had been stripped of all moving parts including my ‘Midnight Oil’ tape!
