Both of our children learned to swim in the pools of Rainbow Slides, Stirling. Our children are now independent adults. We recall that their swimming instructor was Karen. She was fab! There was also Morag, who we recall taught the youngest children. She was fab too!
When I worked as an NHS doctor I looked after a patient who had spent his life as a swimming instructor. In later life he developed dementia and as a result lost the ability to communicate verbally. His family told me that he had taught tens of thousands of children to swim including an Olympic champion. When I met him on the ward I always performed various swimming strokes. He clearly recognised what I was trying to communicate and would smile back brightly to me.
*I am grateful to Old Stirling Facebook for much of the following. Other material comes from CANMORE and the British Newspaper Archive
