‘The New Wonder of Edinburgh’

April 1865: The opening of the Royal Patent Gymnasium was reported in the papers as “The New Wonder of Edinburgh”.

This ‘New Wonder’ was the grand design of John Cox of Gorgie House, to facilitate:healthful and exhilarating recreation in the open air to great numbers at once”.

The modest entrance charge was  6d.

The patent Rotary Boat, or Great Sea Serpent, 471 feet round, could accommodate 600 people.  It was said to travel faster than any steam boat!
