William Hamilton of Gilbertfield (c. 1665-1751) was a friend and correspondent of the poet Allan Ramsay. It was Hamilton who encouraged Allan Ramsay to write in the dialect of his country.

Both Hamilton and Ramsay were primary influences on Rabbie Burns.
