‘He pulled on the ropes with utmost gusto’

On Saturday we visited Stirling castle and on Ladies Rock I noticed this memorial with flowers on the top:

The full inscription is:

“Kimberley relieved 15th February
Ladysmith relieved 28th February 1900
Mafeking relieved 17th May 1900
Pretoria occupied by Lord Roberts’ Army 5th June 1900″

This memorial was placed here by Thomas Lees, Sexton and Bell-ringer for Holy Rude. He was of a family of Bell-ringers. I can almost hear him ringing the bells today: “pulling the ropes with utmost gusto” announcing the news of successes in both the Boer and First World War:
