The Royal College of Psychiatrists promotes its very own award culture. This began a few Presidents’ back alongside a “much expanded” College media team. The RCPsych awards merit “the best and brightest teams and individuals in our field”.
I can only speak personally but I have concerns about this award culture. My fear is that such a culture may encourage deference to a professional body before patients. It also may discourage speaking up by professionals and in this way a particular narrative may be more easily sustained.
Footnote: A number of UK psychiatrists who have been given a “lifetime achievement award” by the Royal College of Psychiatrists are influencers on social media. It is up to history to decide, based on their contributions on social media, if these awardees have followed, or not, the values of the College.
