The last known portrait of Walter Scott

This, the last known portrait of Sir Walter Scott, was painted in Naples in April 1832, by Mrs Auldjo and was signed by Scott. The simple ink wash sketch shows him old and frail looking.

When he got back to London in June 1832 he was very ill, but made a slight recovery when he got back to his well-loved home. ‘I have seen much, but nothing like my ain house’.

Walter Scott died on the 21 September 1832.
