herring and silk: loss, light

I was very fortunate to have been commissioned by Alexander McCall Smith to make short films of two of the songs from ‘These are our Hands’. One of those films was for the song ‘Silver Darlings” about the herring industry:

I recently read ‘The Rings of Saturn’ by  W. G. Sebald. It is a haunting but beautiful book. One of the central themes of the book is a landscape oscillating through a time of light and dark. As part of this, Sebald considers the herring industry which left the sea empty of silver darlings. He contrasts this loss with the light that comes from silkworms (sericulture). This left me, as the reader, deeply moved.
