‘Love among the ruins’

This is a photograph of a young Alistair Hugh Graham:

He was studying at the University of Oxford at the same time as Evelyn Waugh and they became lovers. Alistair Graham’s family home was Barfold House:

We know some of the fate of Sebastian Flyte from Brideshead Revisited, but what happened to Alistair Graham? The following passage from ‘A Life Revisited’, a biography of Evelyn Waugh, reveals that Alistair Graham went on to live out his life in Wales, first at the ancient Wern House, and then more humbly at 8 Rock Street on New Quay’s waterfront:

It would seem then that Alistair Graham was fictionalised twice: first as ‘Sebastian Flyte’ in Brideshead Revisited, by Evelyn Waugh – and then as ‘Lord Cut-Glass’ in Under Milk Wood, by Dylan Thomas:
