Science Media Centre and transparency: where is the leadership?

The Editor in Chief of the BMJ has recently said:

I have written to a number of UK bodies who have a leadership role in healthcare. One of the most widely influential ones, because of its links with the media, is the Science Media Centre:

This is the reply that I have received. The lack of leadership shown by this influential organisation is disappointing:

Thank you for your email. The Science Media Centre is a press office embedded within the mainstream scientific community; we focus on the news media and encouraging scientists and journalists to work together. Our declaration of interests policy is based on those of others in the community. Should members of the scientific community change their policies then we would adapt accordingly.
