This Wednesday, Professor John Krystal, Yale University, has been invited by BAP to give this talk: ‘Linking depression pathophysiology to the mechanism of action of ketamine and “next generation” treatments’
BAP provide this summary of the lecture:
BAP does not share the following information [from Open Payments Data] which evidences that Professor Krystal is a Paid Opinion Leader:
The reason that these payments are available is because USA has Sunshine legilslation and it is mandatory for all payments from industry to be disclosed. Unfortunately, despite the recommendation of Baroness Cumberlege in her report First Do No Harm, the UK has not introduced equivalent legislation.
The UK does have a voluntary register but not all academics and doctors declare. For example you can check on UK educators presenting at this years BAP Summer Meeting. You will find that many of them are not to be found in the Disclosure UK database.
In 2015, another American paid opinion leader was invited by BAP to give a lecture at their summer meeting. Open Payments Data evidence that in the previous 2 years this BAP lecturer had received $3.5 million dollars from the pharmaceutical industry.
