In November 1872, Hector Dove came to Bridge of Allan’s Hydropath as he was feeling poorly. A week later his death, at the age of 54, was widely reported in the newspapers of the day. The headlines invariably were along the lines: “Death of a Heavy Weight’.

Hector seemed to be widely regarded and his wide girth did not matter to those who loved him. Some years before his untimely death he was elected by his constituents to represent them:
