Lykerstanes

This old photograph is of Local postman John Thomson, pointing to a ‘Liquor Stone’, 1890.

“These large flat stones, found at intervals along the sides of the roads were where mourners stopped to rest. Because the coffins were carried shoulder high for long distances to the graveyards at Kinross and Orwell, they could become uncomfortable for the coffin bearers. The stones were places of refreshment where the coffin was rested for foot weary mourners.”
