Most studies on psychiatric drugs go no further than studying 12 weeks exposure. If a marginal benefit is proven, this is sufficient for the drug to be approved and marketed widely. In terms of Evidence Based Medicine, there is a moral and ethical duty for prescribers to make clear, before any psychiatric drug is prescribed, the maximum period of time for which studies can provide evidence of benefit.
