The Medical Model in Mental Health: An Explanation and Evaluation has recently been published by Oxford University Press.
In the weeks leading up to publication the author stated “it is a good job that my book is coming out in May for people interested in accurate depictions of psychiatry’s models and treatments”. The author has since clarified that his book will be “useful for mental health professionals and students as well as patients and carers and philosophers with an interest in health”.
The author has described himself as an “uppity nobody”. His twitter followers have described him as “the leading social media psychiatrist”. The author has concluded that his book makes a “strong argument” and will be signing his book at the Royal College of Psychiatrists forthcoming International Congress in London.
Dr Samei Huda has been subject to a number of complaints in relation to his behaviour on social media. The Core Values of the Royal College of Psychiatrists can be read here. In March of this year the author stated “anyone who follows my twitter account will know that I have many ways to alienate people”. Dr Huda has had the full support of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, his employers and all regulators.
Wikipedia: "Alienist is an archaic term for a psychiatrist or psychologist"
These are my worries in relation to the language used in the public domain by Dr Samei Huda:
-
- I worry about language that comes across as battling or belittling.
- I worry about language used over-certainly or sweepingly.
- I worry about language that may reduce something that is complex to just a few words.
- I worry about language that encourages otherness
