“This unique event will bring together world leaders in research on depression”

This event hosted by the Royal Society of Medicine will take place at 1 Wimpole Street, London on the 29th January 2019. It has been approved for 6 CPD points.

All UK doctors are required by the General Medical Council (GMC) to attain, on an annual basis, sufficient points for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to be awarded a certificate of “good medical standing” by their respective Royal College. Without the ‘award’ of such a certificate a doctor cannot meet the necessary requirements for annual Appraisal and (in terms of a 5 year cycle) would not be Revalidated to continue as a doctor.

The GMC has not supported legislation that would make it mandatory for all those involved in providing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to fully declare competing financial interests.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has not supported legislation that would make it mandatory for all those involved in providing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to fully declare competing financial interests.

The Royal Society of Medicine has not supported legislation that would make it mandatory for all those involved in providing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to fully declare competing financial interests.

The Science Media Centre ("where science meets the headlines") has not supported legislation that would make it mandatory for all those involved in providing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to fully declare competing financial interests.

The Mental Elf (an online provider of CPD, currently with over 64,000 followers) has not supported legislation that would make it mandatory for all those involved in providing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to fully declare competing financial interests.

The following gallery is based only on material that is in the public domain. It includes those educators at this forthcoming CPD-approved event who have declared competing financial interests in the course of their professional career. It is impossible to provide accurate dates in relation to these declarations – as these are generally not made clear. The “3 year window” [the currently accepted period of voluntary and partial declaration] makes it impossible for science/history to study. The industry partnerships that I have included in these pictograms are not necessarily confined to three years.

In the UK, the pharmaceutical industry pays over £40 million each year to opinion leaders. As it stands it is impossible to determine, scientifically or otherwise, the basis of how this may “educate” us all.

The Editor in Chief of the BMJ has described this as a “blot” on “medical integrity”. I would go much further: this is a deep, dark stain that history will never be able to remove.
